From Benfica's treble to Barcelona's high-stakes transfer market
In short: André Gomes has navigated the highest peaks and most challenging setbacks in professional football. From winning a domestic treble in Portugal to a massive €55 million move to Barcelona, his career reflects the volatile nature of elite sports, marked by championship glory and significant injury setbacks.
Born in Grijó in 1993, Gomes emerged as a significant talent within the Benfica youth system. His rise was rapid; by the 2013–14 season, he helped the Lisbon club secure a historic domestic treble, winning the league, the cup, and the Taça da Liga. During this period, his economic rights were a subject of intense business maneuvering, with Benfica selling 100% of his rights to Meriton Capital Limited for €15 million, plus a 25% share of any future transfer fees.
His trajectory led him to La Liga, first with Valencia and then to Barcelona in July 2016. His move to the Catalan giants involved a substantial investment of €35 million, supplemented by €20 million in potential add-ons. While he contributed to Barcelona's Copa del Rey triumph in 2017 by assisting Neymar, his tenure was met with mixed reviews, including being named the season's worst signing by Marca readers.
The physical toll of the game became evident during his time in the Premier League with Everton. After a season-long loan in 2018, he signed permanently for £22 million in 2019. However, a severe ankle injury sustained during a match against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2019 threatened his career. Despite this, he managed a return to action in early 2020 and later found success during a loan spell at Lille, where he earned high praise for his performance against Rennes in 2023.
