The first Brazilian international born outside of Brazil in a century
In short: Andreas Pereira's journey from the Belgian town of Duffel to the Brazilian national team is a masterclass in navigating identity. While he grew up in Europe, his career path was defined by a deliberate choice to follow his father’s heritage over his own birthplace.
Born in Belgium in 1996 to Brazilian parents, Andreas Pereira faced a unique crossroads regarding international eligibility. He initially represented Belgium at the under-15, under-16, and under-17 levels. Ultimately, he opted for Brazil, declaring, "My heart is Brazilian." This move concluded on September 11, 2018, during his first senior appearance versus El Salvador; notably, he was the initial athlete in more than a century to feature for Brazil despite being born abroad. He first joined Brazil's under-20 squad during a successful Panda Cup in China. During the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he scored an equalizer against Serbia. He also played for the Brazilian under-23 team in a friendly match against South Africa.
His path to the elite level was paved by early recognition. After joining PSV at age nine and moving to Manchester United in 2011, he became a target for Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Despite complex international transfer regulations that delayed his debut until April 2012, Pereira quickly rose through the ranks. He won Player of the Tournament for the 2013 Milk Cup and was named Manchester United's under-21 player of the year for the 2014–15 season. He signed his first professional contract on January 7, 2013. He participated in every single game of the first UEFA Youth League while he was young. In a match involving Burnley, he struck a curving ball from twenty-five yards during an FA Youth Cup fixture.
Pereira’s career has been a nomadic journey across four major leagues. Beyond his time at Old Trafford, he spent seasons on loan at Granada (Spain), Valencia (Spain), and Lazio (Italy), as well as a stint with Flamengo (Brazil). Despite a high-profile mistake in the 2021 Copa Libertadores final that cost Flamengo the title, he remained a consistent performer, eventually signing for Fulham in 2022 before returning to Brazil to join Palmeiras in 2025. His move to Flamengo involved a one million euro loan fee paid by the Brazilian club. At Fulham, he made 119 appearances before his departure in August 2025. He recently scored a brace for Palmeiras during a victory over Fortaleza.
