How one coach rose from Italy's second division to the EuroLeague elite
In short: Andrea Trinchieri's journey through European basketball is a masterclass in steady progression. From coaching in Italy's lower divisions to leading top-tier clubs in Germany, Serbia, and Lithuania, his career reflects a relentless climb through the continent's most competitive basketball leagues.
Born on 6 August 1968, Trinchieri's professional coaching path began with an assistant role at Olimpia Milano from 1998 to 2004. His ascent as a head coach was marked by incremental success in the Italian leagues. After leading Vanoli Basket from the Third Division to the Second Division, he moved through various clubs including Juvecaserta Basket and Veroli Basket. It was with Veroli in the 2008–09 season that he secured the Italian Second Division Cup and was named that division's Coach of the Year.
Trinchieri's reputation grew significantly during his tenure with Cantù, where he earned Italian League Coach of the Year honors in both 2010 and 2011. This success paved the way for international roles, including a stint with UNICS Kazan, which earned him the EuroCup Coach of the Year title for the 2013–14 season. His ability to win championships was further proven in Germany with Brose Bamberg, where he secured three consecutive Basketball Bundesliga titles between 2014 and 2017.
The Italian coach has also managed high-stakes international and regional roles. He served as the head coach for the Greece men's national basketball team starting in early 2013, and later led major clubs like Partizan, Bayern Munich, and Žalgiris Kaunas. Most recently, he was appointed to lead PAOK Thessaloniki in the Greek Basketball League and the EuroCup in March 2026, continuing a career defined by diverse experience across Europe's premier basketball landscapes.
