How one man's mixing defined the sound of rock and roll's biggest eras
In short: From the grunge explosion to heavy metal anthems, Andy Wallace has been the sonic architect behind some of the most influential records in history. His ability to blend genres has helped drive over 120 million album sales, shaping the way we hear the world's most iconic rock music.
Born in New Jersey in 1947, Andy Wallace began his career in the 1970s as a musician, performing bass guitar and backup vocals. His musical roots were deeply planted in the 'old R&B' style, drawing heavy inspiration from artists like Little Richard and the legendary Stax Records. This foundational understanding of rhythm and groove eventually transitioned into a career as a chief engineer in his Los Angeles studio.
The turning point for Wallace’s career arrived in the mid-1980s. Following the massive success of the 1986 Run-DMC and Aerosmith collaboration, "Walk This Way," produced alongside Rick Rubin, Wallace became a sought-after specialist. While he initially moved to New York City during the early 1980s hip-hop emergence, he eventually focused his expertise almost exclusively on the art of mixing, earning a reputation as a legendary figure in the recording industry.
His versatility allowed him to navigate diverse genres, from the heavy metal of Slayer and Sepultura to the alternative rock and grunge movements. He has worked with a massive roster of talent, including Nirvana, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and Jeff Buckley. The Recording Academy honoured his technical accuracy in February 1999, granting him a Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for his contributions to Sheryl Crow's "The Globe Sessions".
The scale of his influence is quantifiable: as of May 2021, records featuring a credit to Wallace had reached over 120 million album units sold worldwide. Whether shaping the sound of Avenged Sevenfold or Sonic Youth, Wallace remains a cornerstone of modern audio engineering.
