The nomadic journey of a footballer who mastered the art of the loan
In short: Most athletes seek a steady home, but Angeliño’s career is a masterclass in professional adaptation. From the youth academies of Galicia to the elite stages of the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Serie A, his path illustrates how constant movement can forge a versatile, high-impact career.
Born in Coristanco, Galicia, in 1997, José Ángel Esmorís Tasende began his journey in the youth systems of Bergantiños FC and Deportivo La Coruña. By 2012, he was signed by Manchester City, where he spent years navigating the complexities of elite development. His early years were defined by a 'loan army' trajectory, moving between New York City, Girona, Mallorca, and the Dutch side NAC Breda to gain necessary first-team experience.
The turning point for his professional profile came in the Eredivisie. After joining PSV Eindhoven in 2018, he became a standout performer, winning the Talent of the Season award and earning a spot in the Team of the Season for two consecutive years. His ability to adapt to different tactical environments was further proven during his time at RB Leipzig. There, he played a pivotal role in their historic first-ever Champions League semi-final appearance, notably providing the assist for a late winning goal against Atlético Madrid in August 2020.
Angeliño's career is a study in the modern football economy: a cycle of buy-back clauses, permanent transfers, and strategic loans. After a permanent move to Leipzig in 2021, he moved through Hoffenheim and Galatasaray before eventually settling at Roma in 2024. His journey highlights a specific type of resilience—the ability to remain a high-level contributor while constantly changing teammates, tactics, and countries, eventually returning to his Spanish roots with Deportivo de A Coruña in 2026.
This nomadic path is not just about travel; it is about the accumulation of diverse footballing 'languages.' By competing in the MLS, Eredivisie, Bundesliga, and Serie A, Angeliño has developed a multifaceted skill set that allows him to function as a reliable left-back or wing-back across various continental styles.
