The broadcaster who shattered the glass ceiling of national television news
In short: In 1975, Angela Rippon became the first female journalist to hold a permanent role presenting BBC national television news. Her career spanned from high-stakes newsreading to hosting Eurovision, proving that a single breakthrough could redefine the face of British broadcasting forever.
Angela Rippon's ascent to the BBC One Nine O'Clock News in 1975 was a watershed moment for British media. While she was often described by newspapers as the first female television newsreader, the historical reality is more nuanced. She was actually the third female presenter to appear on national British television broadcasts, following Barbara Mandell on ITN in 1955 and Nan Winton on BBC Television in 1960. She was preceded by Mary Marquis, who served as the primary newsreader for BBC Scotland. Additionally, her early career included working as an editor for Westward Television.
Despite her success, Rippon's career has been marked by significant shifts and resilience. In the early 1980s, she was part of a high-profile exit from the commercial broadcaster TV-am. At the time, working for commercial television was widely believed to preclude any future work with the BBC. Rippon herself feared her career was over, contemplating a return to photojournalism before finding success again in the United States, where she won an Emmy for a documentary. She eventually returned to the United Kingdom to present various radio programmes for LBC Newstalk.
Beyond the newsdesk, Rippon has demonstrated remarkable versatility. She has presented diverse programming ranging from the first two series of Top Gear to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977. In 2023, she made history as the oldest-ever contestant on Strictly Come Dancing at age 79. Her influence extends into philanthropy and leadership, having served as the chair of the English National Ballet and acting as a development lead for Dementia Friendly Communities, for which she was awarded a CBE in 2017. Her diverse portfolio also included hosting the quiz show Masterteam. Furthermore, she has authored fourteen books throughout her prolific career.
