From prison service training to the world's most high-stakes footballing stages
In short: How does a former prison service trainee handle the intense pressure of a World Cup? Anthony Taylor’s career was defined by decisive actions, from managing medical emergencies on the pitch to navigating the volatile emotions of legendary managers and global crowds.
Anthony Taylor's journey through the footballing hierarchy was marked by rapid progression. After starting in the Northern Premier League in 2002 and moving to the Conference North in 2004, he joined the Football League referees' list for the 2006–07 season. In August 2006, he officiated a 0–0 stalemate involving Peterborough United and Wrexham. By 2010, he had reached the Premier League's Select Group, eventually earning a FIFA listing in 2013, which allowed him to officiate international competitions.
Taylor's career was often defined by his handling of high-tension moments. His composed handling of Christian Eriksen's pitch collapse during the Finland vs Denmark UEFA Euro 2020 group fixture earned him acclaim. His ability to signal for medical assistance within seconds was attributed to his previous training at HMP Manchester. However, his decisiveness also drew significant controversy. Taylor handed out a record-breaking 14 yellows during the 2023 UEFA Europa League final, prompting a car park confrontation with José Mourinho, the Roma boss.
The latter part of his career saw both unprecedented statistical feats and professional setbacks. In September 2024, Taylor oversaw a Chelsea vs. Bournemouth match that saw a record-breaking 14 yellow cards in a single Premier League game, leading to his demotion to fourth official by the Premier League. After stepping down from top-level officiating on 21 July 2026, Taylor moved into an administrative role, heading the Turkish Football Federation's elite refereeing strategic development from August 2026.
