In short: The Antigua and Barbuda national football team has faced extreme highs and lows. From a crushing 11–1 loss in their first official match to earning a rhythmic nickname through a fan contest, the team's history is a testament to resilience on the international stage.

The team's competitive history is marked by significant milestones and unexpected setbacks. Their very first match took place in 1950 during the Leeward Islands Tournament, where they secured a 2–0 victory over Montserrat. However, their first official international match on November 10, 1972, resulted in an 11–1 defeat against Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain—the heaviest loss in the squad's history.

Beyond the pitch, the team has navigated complex administrative and legal challenges. While travelling through Norman Manley International Airport in March 2018, equipment manager Danny Benjamin and assistant coach Derrick Edwards faced arrest for marijuana smuggling. After a month of house arrest, both men were acquitted on June 14, as the court found insufficient evidence to prove their involvement in the alleged conspiracy.

Identity and branding have also evolved through community engagement. While the team was once unofficially known as the "Wadadli Boys," a 2012 fan contest officially selected "the Benna Boys" as their nickname. This name pays homage to Benna, a local musical genre similar to calypso. Their reputation was cemented once the squad progressed into the 2014 World Cup qualifying third round.

On the international stage, the team has struggled to reach the highest tiers, having never qualified for a FIFA World Cup or a CONCACAF Gold Cup. Despite this, they have found success regionally, finishing as runners-up in the 1988 CFU Championship and participating four times in the CONCACAF Nations League B.
