From the Upper East Side to the Yankees' shortstop throne
In short: He was a child of Manhattan, raised on partial season tickets and the magic of the 2009 World Series parade. Now, Anthony Volpe has transformed from a highly touted prospect into a cornerstone of the New York Yankees' infield.
Born on April 28, 2001, at Mount Sinai Hospital, Anthony Volpe’s path to professional baseball was paved by a deep-rooted family connection to the New York Yankees. The son of a urologist and an anesthesiologist, Volpe grew up on the Upper East Side before moving to Watchung, New Jersey, during the fourth grade. His ascent through the minor leagues was marked by rare power-speed combinations; in 2022, playing for the Somerset Patriots, he became the first player in the minors to achieve a 20-home run, 5 and 50-steal season since Andruw Jones in 1996.
Volpe’s arrival in the Major Leagues in 2023 was nothing short of historic. After being selected 30th overall in the 2019 MLB draft, he earned the starting shortstop role during spring training. His rookie campaign was a study in extremes: while he struggled with a .209 batting average and a high strikeout rate, his defensive prowess was undeniable. He became the first Yankee rookie ever to win an American League Gold Glove at shortstop, following in the footsteps of Houston's Jeremy Peña.
The 2024 season brought both triumph and physical adversity. Volpe demonstrated remarkable resilience, recording a 21-game hitting streak—the longest for a Yankee in over a decade—and hitting a grand slam in Game 4 of the World Series. However, the physical toll of the game led to surgery in October 2024 to repair a partially torn left labrum. Despite setbacks and injury list stints, Volpe continues to evolve his offensive approach, working to refine his swing and maintain his status as a premier talent in the American League.
