From a state champion relay runner to NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year
In short: Before he was a first-round NFL draft pick, Jared Verse was a versatile athlete excelling in track and field. His rapid ascent from the CAA to the professional stage is a masterclass in defensive dominance and relentless physical development.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, on November 4, 2000, Jared Verse’s path to professional football was marked by significant transitions. After growing up in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, he developed a multi-sport foundation at Central Columbia High School, where he was not only a standout football player but also a member of a state champion 4x400-meter relay team.
His collegiate career began at Albany, where he earned the 2020 CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Despite a redshirt season and a schedule disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Verse's impact was immediate, recording 9.5 sacks in 2021. Seeking a new challenge, he transferred to Florida State University in 2022. At Florida State, he became a two-time All-American and a two-time Defensive MVP, consistently producing high-impact statistics, including 17 tackles for loss in his first season with the Seminoles.
The Los Los Angeles Rams selected Verse with the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. His rookie campaign was nothing short of historic; he earned the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year title and was the only Rams player selected for the Pro Bowl that season. His highlights included a 57-yard fumble recovery touchdown in the Wild Card Round and a critical strip sack of Derek Carr in a win against the New Orleans Saints.
In a major mid-career move, the Rams traded Verse, along with several future draft picks, to the Cleveland Browns on June 1, 2026, in exchange for Myles Garrett. This trade underscored Verse's status as a premier asset in the league, following a 2025 season where he recorded 7.5 sacks and earned his second Pro Bowl selection.
