How a specialist coach turned set pieces into a scoring weapon
In short: In football, most players focus on the ball. But Austin MacPhee focuses on the corners. From the amateur leagues of Scotland to the heights of the Premier League, his obsessive attention to detail has transformed dead-ball situations into a mathematical advantage for some of Europe's biggest clubs.
Austin MacPhee’s career trajectory is unconventional. A former youth player for Forfar Athletic who played college soccer in the United States, MacPhee transitioned from a playing career in Romania and Japan into a highly specialized coaching role. His breakthrough came under Northern Ireland head coach Michael O'Neill, where MacPhee was tasked with managing set pieces. The results were immediate: during the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, the team scored 11 goals from set pieces in just 10 games.
This success established MacPhee as a premier specialist. He moved through various roles, including a stint with Danish Superliga side Midtjylland and assistant positions at clubs like Cowdenbeath, St Mirren, and Heart of Midlothian. His reputation for 'obsessive attention to detail'—as noted by O'Neill—made him a sought-after asset for managers like Unai Emery at Aston Villa. During the 2023–24 season, his influence was evident as Aston Villa scored 25 set-piece goals across all competitions, the highest number in Europe.
MacPhee's impact extends beyond tactical instruction to the very structure of modern coaching staffs. He has held roles with the Scotland national team and most recently the Portugal national team under Roberto Martínez. His ability to engineer goals from corners and free kicks has even led to fan chants during major trophy wins. Beyond the pitch, he founded the AM Soccer Club, a charity that has provided coaching to over 500 players and helped graduates enter professional academies.
