In short: In the middle of the night in March 1984, the Baltimore Colts vanished. Owner Robert Irsay covertly relocated the franchise to Indianapolis, leaving a city that had embraced the team as its own spirit. This sudden departure sparked a decades-long bitterness and reshaped the landscape of professional football.

The departure of the Colts was the culmination of years of friction between ownership and the city of Baltimore. During the late 1950s, the Colts were a powerhouse led by legends like Johnny Unitas and Lenny Moore, embodying the city's working-class identity. However, the franchise entered a downward spiral after Robert Irsay gained control in 1972 through a swap with Caroll Rosenbloom, who moved to the Los Angeles Rams. Rosenbloom had already grown frustrated with Memorial Stadium, which he described as antiquated. The facility suffered from significant issues, including outdated bench seating and inadequate bathroom facilities, and the city government was unwilling to replace the aging venue.

The tension reached a breaking point when the Maryland General Assembly considered using eminent domain to seize the team. Amidst this instability, the Colts' decline became evident on the field. In 1983, the franchise drafted Stanford's John Elway as the number one overall pick, but the young quarterback refused to report, opting to play baseball for the New York Yankees instead. This forced the Colts to trade Elway to the Denver Broncos, further weakening the roster.

The vacuum left by the Colts remained unfilled until 1996. In a move that mirrored the Colts' exit, Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell moved his team to Baltimore following a dispute over stadium funding. This new franchise, the Baltimore Ravens, was named after Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven." While the Ravens achieved significant success, including Super Bowl victories in 2001 and 2013, the memory of the Colts' midnight relocation remains a deep wound for Baltimoreans.
