In short: What began as a rejected demo for Ariana Grande transformed into a historic milestone. By bringing together Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, this 2014 hit became the first all-female collaboration in history to achieve RIAA diamond certification, proving the massive commercial power of female empowerment in pop music.

Released on 28 July 2014, "Bang Bang" was originally recorded by Ariana Grande, who reportedly did not like the initial result. The track was eventually offered to Jessie J, who decided to record it. After her version was completed, Republic Records sent the track to Nicki Minaj to add her rap verse. While Grande was initially surprised by the inclusion of the other two artists, she ultimately agreed to remain on the track. Following the recording, the label sent the song to Minaj to contribute her rap. Jessie J later mentioned that the collaborative energy felt incredibly supportive and empowering.

The song's production, helmed by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, and Rickard Göransson, features an up-tempo, soulful sound characterized by heavy claps, bouncy beats, and horn blasts. Critics noted its stylistic blend, with some comparing the melody to Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and others describing it as a fusion of pop and hip hop. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, has amassed over 2 billion views on YouTube. It was officially released on 24 August 2014.

The track's commercial success was immense. It debuted at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in the United Kingdom. The RIAA awarded the track a diamond certification in May 2024 after it surpassed 10 million equivalent units sold within the US. This achievement marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time an all-female collaboration reached this level of sales in the United States. The single achieved massive popularity, reaching the top ten in various countries such as Canada and South Korea. The track also secured a 57th Grammy Awards nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
