From university campus team to a dominant force in Thai football
In short: Founded in 1988 as a student side for Bangkok University, this club has navigated a dramatic transformation. After a shocking relegation in 2010, they have since risen to become a powerhouse, capturing major titles and competing on the continental stage in the AFC Champions League.
The club's identity underwent a fundamental shift in 2009. To comply with new Football Association of Thailand regulations requiring top-flight teams to be registered as limited companies, the club rebranded from Bangkok University to Bangkok United, adopting the nickname 'Bangkok Angels'. This period also saw a relocation to the 10,320-capacity Thai-Japanese Stadium.
The club's trajectory has been marked by extreme highs and lows. After winning their first league title in 2006, they suffered relegation in 2010, despite being backed by the True Corporation media company. However, a resurgence began in the mid-2010s, particularly under Brazilian head coach Alexandré Pölking, whose attacking style helped the team finish fifth in the 2015 season.
In recent years, Bangkok United has established itself as a perennial contender. They have secured a Thai League 1 title, a Thai League 2 title, and the 2023 Thailand Champions Cup, where they defeated Buriram United 2–0 on 5 August 2023. Their success has extended to the AFC Champions League, where they have competed in multiple group stages and reached the round of 16.
The club's infrastructure is also evolving. After years of playing at the 25,000-capacity Thammasat Stadium to meet continental requirements, the club announced in April 2025 that it would relocate home matches to the True BG Stadium for the 2025–26 season, a move intended to elevate its domestic and regional profile.
