In short: At just 17 years and 45 days old, Ben Woodburn shattered a long-standing Liverpool record to become the club's youngest goalscorer. His rise was so rapid that he was fast-tracked into elite training with Pep Lijnders while still navigating the transition from high school.

Woodburn’s trajectory at Liverpool is a study in accelerated development. Joining the academy at age seven, his talent was identified early by former director Frank McParland. To balance his education and athletic growth, the club took the unusual step of providing a personal driver to transport him from training sessions back to his home in Tattenhall, allowing him to remain in his local schooling environment.

His breakthrough came during the 2016–17 season. After impressing first-team coach Pep Lijnders in the 'Futures Group,' he was handed a non-competitive debut against Tranmere Rovers. By November 2016, he had signed his first professional contract and made his senior debut at 17 years and 42 days. Just three days later, he scored against Leeds United to break Michael Owen's record by 98 days—a feat that eventually stood until August 2025.

Despite this early success, Woodburn’s path has been defined by the challenges of navigating a high-pressure career. He faced significant injury setbacks during loan spells at Sheffield United and Oxford United, including a 'carbon copy' foot injury caused by his specific weight distribution. While he was once nominated for the European Golden Boy award alongside Kylian Mbappé, his journey since has seen him move through various clubs, including Preston North End and Hearts, before joining Salford City in 2024.

His international career is equally notable for its early commitment. Despite being eligible for England—having even attended a schoolboys' training camp there—Woodburn rejected an under-16 call-up in 2014 to commit to Wales. He eventually became the nation's second youngest goalscorer, trailing only Gareth Bale.
