The versatile athlete who reinvented his role to reach the Super Bowl
In short: From high school star to NFL linebacker, Ben VanSumeren's career has been defined by constant adaptation. After navigating a complex collegiate path between Michigan and Michigan State, he eventually transitioned to fullback, a move that coincided with a championship victory with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Born on May 5, 2000, in Bay City, Michigan, Ben VanSumeren’s football journey began with a childhood declaration of his professional ambitions. During his time at Garber High School in Essexville, he demonstrated remarkable versatility, playing as a linebacker, defensive lineman, quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. His talent as a receiver was particularly notable; during his senior year, he set a state record with 81 receptions for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning the Associated Press division player of the year honors.
His collegiate career was marked by significant shifts in both team and position. After initially committing to Iowa, he switched to the Michigan Wolverines. At Michigan, he played various roles including fullback, running back, and linebacker between 2018 and 2020. Seeking more playing time, he transferred to the Michigan State Spartans. It was at Michigan State that he found significant success on defense, starting 10 of 11 games in his final season and recording 81 tackles, two sacks, and two pass breakups.
VanSumeren entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. His professional trajectory involved navigating the practice squad and the active roster, eventually starting a game against the New York Giants on December 25, 2023. In his second season, he returned to his original college position of fullback. Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury on November 29, 2024, he was part of the Eagles' Super Bowl championship team at the conclusion of that season.
