The arena that survived a slippery floor and a pandemic
In short: From its origins as the Ice Palace to hosting global icons like Coldplay, this Tampa Bay landmark has navigated naming rights shifts, major renovations, and even a literal oily disaster. Discover how a multipurpose venue became a cornerstone of Florida sports history.
Opened in 1996 as the Ice Palace, the arena was built to solve a critical infrastructure gap: Tampa Bay lacked a major league-sized hockey venue. The city of Tampa invested $86 million and the Tampa Bay Lightning contributed $53 million for its construction. It served as a necessary upgrade from smaller regional sites like the Expo Hall (10,425 capacity) or the Bayfront Arena (5,800 capacity), which were insufficient for long-term NHL use.
The venue has undergone significant identity shifts and physical upgrades. Its naming rights have moved from the St. Petersburg Times to Amalie Oil Company, and finally to Benchmark International in 2025. In 2012, it received a massive video display board—the largest of its kind in North America at the time. A $35 million renovation planned for 2012 included a new grand plaza, an 11,000-square-foot outdoor deck, and updated climate controls to improve both ice quality and spectator comfort.
The arena's history is marked by high-stakes moments and unique anomalies. It hosted the Lightning's first Stanley Cup wins in 2004 and 2021, but also saw a bizarre cancellation in 2010 when an oil-based cleaning solution made the basketball floor so slippery that the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat had to cancel their preseason game just 30 minutes before tipoff. It has also served as a temporary home for the Toronto Raptors during pandemic travel restrictions and hosted everything from UFC fights to NCAA Frozen Fours.
