In short: When Big Brother 23 premiered, it carried a heavy cultural weight. Beyond the casino theme and the high-stakes gameplay, the season became a landmark for representation, culminating in a first-ever milestone for the show's main edition that sparked intense national debate.

The twenty-third season of Big Brother, which aired in 2021, was shaped by a significant shift in production policy. In response to a lack of diverse representation on television and a broader racial reckoning in the United States, CBS mandated that at least 50% of the cast for its reality shows must be BIPOC starting with the 2021–22 season. This policy directly influenced the composition of the HouseGuests for this specific season.

A central narrative of the season revolved around 'The Cookout,' an all-black six-person alliance. The group formed with the explicit goal of combating the historical trend of minorities being evicted early in the game. While some viewers accused the alliance of making voting decisions based solely on race, the group's intent was to ensure their collective survival. Host Julie Chen Moonves defended the alliance, noting that the importance of their strategy might be difficult for those outside of the community to fully grasp.

The season reached a historic conclusion on September 29, 2021. Xavier Prather was crowned the winner after a 9–0 unanimous jury vote, making him the first Black HouseGuest to win the main edition of the show. Prather became only the third winner in the show's history to achieve a unanimous victory, following Dan Gheesling and Cody Calafiore. The season also saw Tiffany Mitchell voted as 'America's Favorite HouseGuest,' earning her a $50,000 prize.

The competition featured several unique mechanics, including a 'Wildcard' competition for the first four weeks and a 'High Roller's Room' where HouseGuests used an in-game currency called 'BB Bucks' to gamble for powers. For the initial time, the series broadcasted Double Eviction events on two straight weeks, causing a swift rotation of participants.
