The music festival season that redefined reality television history
In short: In the summer of 2022, a group of strangers entered a desert oasis designed like Palm Springs. What began as a colorful competition transformed into a profound national conversation about bias, microaggressions, and the resilience of a historic winner.
Big Brother 24, which premiered on July 6, 2022, featured a music festival theme and a house decorated with mid-century modern aesthetics. The set included a golf-themed bedroom with AstroTurF headboards and a 'Have-Not' room resembling a drained pool. While the season utilized 94 HD cameras and 113 microphones to record every move, the gameplay was defined by complex twists, such as the 'Backstage Boss Pass' and 'Besties' sets, where players competed in pairs or groups.
The season is most notable for the victory of Taylor Hale, who became the first Black female HouseGuest to win the grand prize of $750,000. Her win, decided by an 8-1 jury vote on September 25, 2022, was historic as she also secured the title of America's Favorite HouseGuest, earning an additional $50,000. However, the season was shadowed by intense controversy. Live feeds revealed significant tension, including racial microaggressions and verbal attacks directed at Hale by other contestants.
Host Julie Chen Moonves addressed the heavy criticism directed at the HouseGuests, noting that the transparency of live feeds makes it easier to witness such behaviors. The season also saw significant shifts in production dynamics; while the first five evictions occurred behind closed doors due to pandemic restrictions, a live audience returned to the studio on August 18, 2022. The social impact of the season's interpersonal conflicts remains a central part of its legacy in reality television history.
