From social media controversy to State of Origin heroics
In short: Bradman Best’s rise in Australian rugby league is a study in resilience and high-stakes pressure. After early career setbacks and public scrutiny, he became a pivotal figure for New South Wales, notably remaining undefeated in his three State of Origin appearances.
Born on the Central Coast in 2001 to former professional player Roger Best, Bradman Best followed a traditional path through St Edward's College and the Woy Woy Roosters. His early career was marked by rapid progression; he joined the Newcastle Knights' NRL squad at just 17 years old. However, his transition to the senior level was hampered by significant physical tolls, including a foot injury in 2019 and various elbow and shoulder issues that sidelined him for months.
Best faced early scrutiny regarding his playmaking. After failing to provide an assist in a Round 3 draw against the Penrith Panthers, he engaged in targeted one-on-one practice with teammate Edrick Lee to refine his passing. This dedication paid off in Round 4, where Best scored two tries and provided a key assist. His performance sparked immediate social media attention, where some fans controversially compared his impact to that of legendary cricketer Don Bradman.
The trajectory of his career shifted dramatically in 2023. After being stood down by the Newcastle Knights for failing to meet team standards—specifically missing a team bus—Best found redemption on the biggest stage. He was selected as a surprise debutant for New South Wales in Game 3 of the State of Origin series, scoring two tries to prevent a series sweep. He repeated this feat in 2026, scoring a pivotal long-range try and an interception at Suncorp Stadium to secure a 30-12 victory.
Despite Newcastle's fluctuating fortunes—ranging from a 5th place finish in 2023 to the Wooden Spoon in 2025—Best has established himself as a reliable closer. He remains undefeated in his three starts for New South Wales, proving that his ability to perform under pressure transcends club-level volatility.
