From junior college to NFL record-breaker: the unconventional career of Corey Bojorquez
In short: Corey Bojorquez took a winding path to the NFL, bypassing traditional recruitment to refine his craft at a junior college. Now a veteran punter for the Cleveland Browns, he has evolved from an undrafted hopeful into a league-leading specialist known for booming kicks and unexpected moments under center.
Born on September 13, 1996, in California, Corey Bojorquez initially committed to Sacramento State before pivoting to Cerritos College. This decision was strategic; he sought to improve his visibility for NCAA Division I programs. After stints at the University of New Mexico, he entered the professional ranks in 2018 as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. Though he was cut before the season began, his career gained momentum when the Buffalo Bills claimed him off waivers.
Bojorquez quickly demonstrated his versatility and poise. During a 2019 playoff game against the Houston Texans, he found himself in a bizarre situation: serving as the team's holder, he was forced to line up under center to spike the ball and stop the clock after a confusing officiating review. His physical prowess as a punter became increasingly evident as his career progressed. In 2021, while playing for the Green Bay Packers, he launched an 82-yard punt against the Chicago Bears, marking the longest kick of that entire NFL season.
Since joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022, Bojorquez has solidified his role as a premier specialist. His 2024 campaign was particularly notable, as he led the league in both total punts and total yardage, while also recording a career-best 84-yard punt against the Las Vegas Raiders. Beyond his athletic achievements, Bojorquez maintains a life outside of football; he is of Mexican descent, the oldest of four siblings, and is an ordained minister.
The trajectory of his career highlights the unpredictability of professional sports. From being waived by his first team to securing multi-year extensions, Bojorquez has navigated the league through various organizations, including the Los Angeles Rams. His journey from a junior college prospect to a consistent, high-performing NFL veteran serves as a testament to the value of persistence and adaptability in a high-stakes environment.
