In short: In the fantasy world of Breath of Fire III, the ultimate antagonist isn't a monster, but a deity with a terrifying logic. To prevent humanity from destroying itself with its own technology, the goddess Myria ordered the systematic extermination of the dragon race. It is a grim study of extreme preservation.

The narrative centers on Ryu, the last surviving member of The Brood—a race of humans capable of transforming into powerful dragons. For millennia, the world was shaped by the Brood until Myria, an ancient Goddess of Destruction, orchestrated their slaughter. Her motive was not malice, but a radical form of protection: she believed humanity's advanced technology posed an existential threat to the world and sought to preserve life by removing the dragons and dismantling human progress.

The game explores this moral gray area through the character of Garr, a warrior who participated in the genocide at Myria's behest. Years later, after a spiritual epiphany, Garr seeks Ryu's help to uncover the truth behind the massacre. This journey reveals the tragic cost of Myria's actions, culminating in a final confrontation where she offers Ryu a choice: live in peaceful seclusion within her fortress or face destruction. This choice mirrors the fate of Teepo, a friend of Ryu who chose to live in the fortress to spare the world from his own destructive power.

Mechanically, the game supports this epic scale with a transition to three-dimensional graphics and voice acting, featuring a party of three characters. Players navigate a world where they can influence the growth of a Fairy Village or apprentice under masters to learn skills. While the jazz-inspired soundtrack was polarizing among critics, the game is noted for its craftsmanship in detailing a world where humans, anthropomorphic creatures, and the remnants of a slaughtered race coexist in the shadow of a goddess's heavy-handed mercy.
