A legendary assassin is reborn to kill the hero destined to destroy the world
In short: After a lifetime of killing, a master assassin's retirement is cut short by a sabotaged plane. Instead of death, he finds a goddess who offers a second chance: reincarnation into a world of magic and swords, provided he fulfills a grim mission to assassinate a hero.
The series, written by Rui Tsukiyo and illustrated by Reia, follows a protagonist formerly known as Allen Smith. After his plane was sabotaged, the world's greatest assassin was awakened by a goddess. She tasked him with a specific mission: he must kill the Hero, Epona, once they reach the age of 18. This necessity arises from a prophecy suggesting that Epona, after defeating the Demon Lord, would become intoxicated by power and destroy the world. The goddess's motivation stems from her need for his specific expertise to prevent global destruction. This divine intervention offers him a chance to live his life to the fullest.
In this new life, the protagonist is reborn as Lugh Tuatha Dé, the second child and son of Baron Cian and Esri Tuatha Dé. While Lugh is trained in the arts of medicine and assassination by his father, he possesses skills far beyond a typical prodigy due to his previous life. His existence is complicated by the complex nature of the Hero, Epona, who is a pacifist at heart and is genetically a woman despite being raised as a man. Lugh's upbringing involves learning both medical practices and lethal combat techniques from his father. He also manages a cosmetics brand through his associate, Maha.
The narrative spans multiple media formats. Originally serialized on the website Shōsetsuka ni Narō from July 2018 to October 2021, the light novel was acquired by Kadokawa Shoten in February 2019. A manga adaptation by Hamao Sumeragi has been available since January 2019. An anime adaptation produced by Silver Link and Studio Palette aired between October and December 2021, with a second season produced by Silver Link scheduled for January 2027. The original web novel was published on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform. Currently, Yen Press handles the North American licensing for both the manga and the light novel series.
