The coach who refused to tank for better draft picks
In short: In 2021, Brian Flores achieved something rare: two consecutive winning seasons for the Miami Dolphins. But his success came with a heavy price. After refusing to deliberately lose games to secure higher draft picks, the head coach was fired, sparking a landmark legal battle against the NFL.
Brian Flores's rise through the NFL coaching ranks was marked by significant success within the New England Patriots organization. After joining the team as a scouting assistant in 2004, he climbed the ladder to become a defensive playcaller. His tenure in New England included contributing to multiple Super Bowl victories, including Super Bowl LIII, where the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13–3.
In February 2019, Flores became the fourth Latino in NFL history to serve as a head coach when he was hired by the Miami Dolphins. While his tenure in Miami included achieving the franchise's first consecutive winning seasons since 2003—occurring in 2020 and 2021—it was also defined by intense controversy. Flores later filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross pressured him to 'tank' by deliberately losing games to improve draft positioning, allegedly offering $100,000 per loss.
The lawsuit, filed in February 2022, also accused the NFL and several teams, including the New York Giants and Denver Broncos, of systemic racial discrimination in hiring practices. Flores alleged the Giants decided on a candidate before interviewing him and that the Broncos conducted a 'sham' interview. While the NFL successfully moved to compel arbitration for many claims, the core allegations regarding hiring transparency and the pressure to manipulate game outcomes remain a central part of his legal fight for reform in the league.
