In short: Willie Parker didn't have the pedigree of a first-round pick, but he became a household name by rewriting the record books. From a benchWARmer in college to a Super Bowl record-breaker, his career serves as a masterclass in perseverance and the unpredictable nature of professional sports.

Parker's journey began as an undrafted free agent in 2004. At the University of North Carolina, his path was complicated by coaching decisions. Head coach John Bunting restricted Parker's playing time to force him to 'bulk up' for a power-running scheme, and his father noted that the murder of Parker's best friend during his sophomore year made adapting to the new system even harder. Despite these hurdles, Parker eventually carved out a role with the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming the first Steeler since Jerome Bettis in 2001 to top 1,000 rushing yards in a season.

His breakout came in 2005, where he became only the second undrafted running back in NFL history to rush for over 1,200 yards. This momentum culminated in Super Bowl XL, where Parker etched his name into the history books. He recorded a 75-yard touchdown run—the longest rushing play in Super Bowl history—surpassing the previous 74-yard mark set by Marcus Allen in 1988. He finished that game with a 9.3 yards-per-carry average, the third-best in Super Bowl history for a minimum of 10 carries.

Parker's career was defined by high-ceiling performances and physical toll. In 2006, he broke the all-time Steelers single-game rushing record with 223 yards against the Cleveland Browns. However, his later years were marked by significant injuries, including a broken fibula in 2007 and turf toe in 2009. Despite these setbacks, Parker remained a loyalist to the Pittsburgh franchise; excluding the preseason, he never played for another team during his entire professional career.
