From a first-round draft pick to a defensive master of the diamond
In short: In just a few seasons, Brice Turang has transformed from a highly touted prospect into one of Major League Baseball's premier defenders. After navigating the minor leagues and a pandemic-interrupted development, he has secured the highest honors a second baseman can achieve.
Selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 21st overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft, Turang arrived in professional baseball with significant expectations and a $3.4 million signing bonus. His journey through the minor leagues saw him move through various clubs, including the Arizona League Brewers, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, and the Nashville Sounds. While his offensive numbers fluctuated—notably hitting .200 during a stint with the Carolina Mudcats—his defensive potential remained a constant.
Turang's ascent to the Major Leagues culminated in a 2023 debut, where he quickly made an impact. During his rookie season, he recorded 26 stolen bases and demonstrated defensive capabilities that advanced metrics rated as above average. By 2024, his performance reached a new peak. He recorded 50 stolen bases, ranking third in the majors, and achieved a remarkably low pull percentage of just 26.4 percent. This defensive excellence earned him both the Gold Glove Award at second base and the prestigious Platinum Glove Award, recognizing him as the league's best overall fielder.
The 2025 season marked a significant offensive breakthrough. By adjusting his batting stance, grip, and bat speed, Turang achieved career highs across the board, including an 18 home run, 81 RBI season. His contributions were pivotal in the postseason, specifically hitting a decisive home run in Game 5 of the NLDS against the Chicago Cubs to secure a series victory. Beyond the diamond, Turang comes from a deep athletic lineage; his father, Brian, played two seasons for the Seattle Mariners, and his sisters have competed in high-level collegiate sports.
