How a backup goalkeeper became the Premier League's most sought-after talent
In short: In 2019, Brice Samba arrived at Nottingham Forest as a mere deputy. Yet, through a series of high-stakes saves and remarkable consistency, he transformed from an undisclosed-fee backup into a record-breaking Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year.
Samba's journey through professional football is a study in persistence and seizing opportunity. After developing in the Le Havre youth system and making his professional debut for Marseille in early 2014, he spent several years navigating loans and transfers to Caen and Nancy. However, his career trajectory shifted significantly when he joined Nottingham Forest in August 2019. Initially brought in to support on-loan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, Samba's rise was fueled by Muric's errors, allowing him to claim the number one spot and earn the Championship Fans' Player of the Month in November 2019.
His impact in England was most visible during the 2022 Championship play-offs. Samba became a decisive figure, saving three penalties in the semi-final to propel Forest toward the final. Although a groin injury forced him from the pitch in the 90th minute of the final against Huddersfield Town, he played a role in Forest's return to the Premier League—their first such appearance in 23 years.
Following his stint in England, Samba moved to Lens in July 2022. His subsequent season in Ligue 1 was statistically dominant. He recorded 15 clean sheets in 38 league matches, the highest in the division, and conceded only 29 goals. This performance helped Lens secure a Champions League spot for the first time since the 2002–03 season, finishing just one point behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. His individual excellence was recognized with the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year award.
A dual national of the Republic of the Congo and France, Samba's international career has also ascended. After receiving his first senior call-up in March 2023 for Euro 2024 qualifying, he made his debut against Gibraltar in June 2023. His rise has been so rapid that he was named to the France squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
