The man who used a plow to point the way to football stardom
In short: Before he was a professional wrestling champion or an NFL legend, Bronko Nagurski was a farmhand in Minnesota. Legend says he was discovered while plowing a field, displaying a raw, physical power that would eventually redefine the limits of professional football and heavyweight wrestling.
Born in 1908 to Ukrainian and Polish immigrants, Bronislau 'Bronko' Nagurski's path to greatness began in the timber and farming operations of International Falls, Minnesota. His recruitment to the University of Minnesota is steeped in myth; coach Clarence Spears claimed he saw the young Nagurski using a plow as a directional pointer. While Spears later admitted he likely invented the story, the physical reality of Nagursuki's strength was undeniable. During his college years from 1927 to 1929, he became a consensus All-American, famously playing both fullback and tackle.
Nagurski's professional career with the Chicago Bears, spanning 1930 to 1937 and later 1943, established him as a terrifying force. Standing 6'2" and weighing 235 pounds, he was often larger than the linemen he faced. He was a dual-threat player, serving as a dominant defensive tackle—earning the nickname 'The Monster'—and a punishing fullback. His impact was so profound that legendary writer Grantland Rice once suggested that eleven Nagurskis would easily overwhelm a team of all-time greats like Red Grange.
Beyond the gridiron, Nagurski achieved elite status in the wrestling ring. Managed by Tony Stecher, he became a multiple-time World Heavyweight Champion, notably defeating Lou Thesz in 1939 to claim the National Wrestling Association title. Despite his immense physical prowess, his career was marked by the toll of his playing style; by 1944, the US Army deemed him medically unfit for service due to injuries sustained during his football years. He remains one of the few athletes to be inducted into both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
