The versatile drummer behind Avenged Sevenfold and Bad Religion
In short: From punk rock anthems to progressive metal complexity, Brooks Wackerman has navigated the diverse landscapes of modern rock. Whether filling in for Blink-182 or touring with Tenacious D, his technical precision and stylistic range have made him one of the most sought-after percussionists in the industry.
Born on February 15, 1977, Brooks Wackerman's musical journey began under the guidance of his father, Chuck, who started teaching him drums at age five. This early training laid the foundation for a prolific career that spans multiple genres, including punk, metal, and jazz. Wackerman first entered the professional scene as a teenager with the band Bad4Good, releasing the album Refugee in 1992, produced by Steve Vai.
Wackerman's career is defined by his ability to adapt to vastly different musical environments. He spent fourteen years with the punk rock band Bad Religion, joining in 2001 to replace Bobby Schayer and contributing to five studio albums. During this same era, he served as the primary touring drummer for Tenacious D, earning the nickname "Thunderskin" from Jack Black during the Rize of the Fenix tour in 2012.
In 2015, Wackerman joined the metal band Avenged Sevenfold, a move that was kept quiet for a year while the band ensured he was the right fit. His debut full-length with the group, 2016's The Stage, showcased a progressive metal style characterized by fast double kicks and blast beats. Beyond these major roles, his session and touring credits include work with Blink-182, Korn, and Suicidal Tendencies, cementing his reputation as a versatile force in percussion.
The Wackerman musical lineage is notable; his brothers, Chad and John, are also drummers. While Brooks has achieved significant solo and group success, his technical evolution—from his early days in Infectious Grooves to his current setup featuring Drum Workshop drums and Istanbul Agop cymbals—reflects a lifetime of rhythmic mastery.
