From Baltimore's chess club to the NBA's elite durability
In short: Bub Carrington is rewriting the record books for the Washington Wizards. After a historic collegiate debut and a standout rookie season, the Baltimore native has become a rare symbol of consistency, appearing in every single game of his first two professional seasons.
Born on July 21, 2005, in Baltimore, Maryland, Carlton Kaleel "Bub" Carrington III entered a family legacy of basketball. Named after his father, Carlton "Bub" Carrington, he was the third person in his lineage to carry the name. Before his professional ascent, Carrington was a multi-sport standout at Saint Frances Academy, where he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball, while also participating in the school's chess club.
His high school career was defined by prolific scoring, including a Saint Frances record of over 1,000 points. In the 2022–23 campaign, he posted averages exceeding 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals each game, guiding his squad to a 29–11 total record. This momentum carried into his collegiate years at the University of Pittsburgh, where he achieved a historic feat in his debut against North Carolina A&T. In that game, he recorded 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking the first triple-double in Pittsburgh school history and only the second in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history.
Carrington entered the NBA via the 2024 draft, selected 14th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to the Washington Wizards. He has since established himself as a model of durability. In his rookie season, he was one of only 11 players to play in all 82 games, eventually earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in May 2025.
