The scoring prodigy who rewrote the NBA record books
In short: In February 2023, a 21-year-old guard achieved a feat of scoring consistency that had eluded almost everyone in basketball history. Cam Thomas didn't just score; he dominated, becoming the youngest player ever to record three consecutive 40-point games in the NBA.
Born in Yokosuka, Japan, in 2001, Cam Thomas emerged as a premier scoring talent long before reaching the professional ranks. After a standout high school career at Oak Hill Academy—where he averaged 31.5 points per game as a senior—he committed to LSU in 2019. His collegiate debut in November 2020 saw him immediately impact the game, leading all freshmen with 23 points per game and earning First Team All-SEC honors.
Thomas entered the NBA via the 2021 draft, selected 27th overall by the Brooklyn Nets. He quickly established himself as a prolific bench scorer, setting a league record for the most points scored off the bench in a season opener with 36 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers in October 2023. His ability to find the basket was further highlighted when he surpassed Bernard King's record for the most 40-point performances by a player aged 22 or younger in Nets history.
His rapid ascent was marked by historic statistical runs. In early 2023, he became the second youngest player to score 40+ points in back-to-back games, trailing only LeBron James. Shortly after, he secured the record for the most consecutive 40-point games by a player of any age. Despite his offensive brilliance, his tenure with the Nets was marked by volatility, including a $40,000 fine in February 2023 for comments deemed anti-gay during a post-game interview.
Following a stint with the Nets that saw him waived in early 2026, Thomas joined the Milwaukee Bucks in February 2026. In his debut for the Bucks, he recorded 34 points off the bench, tying a franchise record for scoring by a reserve in a regular-season game set by Jordan Nwora in 2021.
