The versatile Portuguese club that once mastered baseball and football
In short: Long before it was a fixture in the Primeira Liga, Casa Pia AC was a sporting powerhouse of unparalleled variety. From winning regional championships without a single defeat to being the only Portuguese club to regularly practice baseball, its history is a remarkable saga of resilience and athletic breadth.
While officially founded on 3 July 1920 by figures such as Cândido de Oliveira and Ricardo Ornelas, the club's roots stretch back to 1893. Its predecessor, the Real Casa Pia de Lisboa football team, famously defeated the 'invincible' Carcavelos Club in 1898, a victory that helped cement football's presence in Portugal. The club's identity is deeply tied to the Casa Pia children's charity, with many athletes—including the legendary captain Oliveira, who arrived at the institution as an orphan at age nine—coming from the charity's care.
In its early years, the club demonstrated extraordinary versatility, competing in 25 different sports. A notable curiosity was its regular baseball practice, highlighted by a narrow 25–24 victory against the American Colony on 4 July 1923. The club's early footballing dominance was equally striking; in its debut season, it secured the Lisbon Regional Championship and the Lisbon Cup without losing a single match, and even triumphed over FC Porto in the Taça 27 de Julho.
The club's journey has been marked by significant displacement and resurgence. After the 1939–40 expropriation of its Campo do Restelo ground by the Estado Novo, the club lacked its own stadium for decades, eventually moving to the Estádio Pina Manique in 1954. After an 83-year absence from the top flight, the team finally achieved promotion to the Primeira Liga in the 2022–23 season, completing a long-awaited return to the pinnacle of Portuguese football.
