From junior champion to professional mainstay: the resilient rise of Caty McNally
In short: A teenage prodigy with a penchant for major titles, Caty McNally has navigated the intense highs of the WTA Tour and the grueling lows of injury. From her celebrated 'McCoco' partnership to a remarkable comeback after elbow surgery, her career is a testament to professional endurance.
Born in Madeira, Ohio, on November 20, 2001, McNally entered tennis as part of a sporting family. Her mother, Lynn Nabors-McNally, was a professional player who reached a career-high doubles ranking inside the top 250, and her brother John was also a high-ranked junior. This foundation paved the way for a stellar junior career, highlighted by winning the 2018 French Open doubles title alongside Iga Świątek and the US Open girls' doubles title with Coco Gauff. She also finished as the runner-up in the Wimbledon junior doubles tournament for three consecutive years. Additionally, she was a member of the United States team that secured the Junior Fed Cup in 2017.
McNally's professional career is defined by her versatility and her high-profile doubles partnership with Gauff, known to fans as 'McCoco.' Together, they reached the 2021 US Open final and secured multiple WTA titles. McNally's doubles prowess is significant; she has achieved a career-high ranking of No. 11 on April 4, 2022, and has secured nine WTA Tour doubles titles, including three with Gauff.
However, her path has not been without significant setbacks. In 2023, an elbow injury forced her to withdraw from the US Open, leading to surgery in March 2024 at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Her resilience was tested during her recovery, but she successfully returned to competition, winning the Tampa W50 in late 2024 and seeing a massive jump in her singles ranking as she fought back through the ranks. Her comeback included a doubles victory at the Transylvania Open alongside Asia Muhammad. Following her return, she also secured her first title since the surgery at the Tampa W50 event.
