How a small Italian football club survived bankruptcy to reach the national stage
In short: Delfino Pescara 1936 has endured a volatile history, oscillating between the heights of Serie A and the depths of financial collapse. From a 2009 bankruptcy that nearly erased the team to a creative youth-led design initiative, the club remains a resilient fixture of Italian football in the Abruzzo region.
Founded in 1936, the club spent decades as a modest participant in the Italian league system. Its trajectory shifted significantly in the 1980s under coach Giovanni Galeone, whose commitment to aggressive, attacking football propelled the team to Serie A in 1987. Despite these flashes of success, the club struggled to maintain its top-flight status, frequently suffering relegation and returning to the second tier.
The early 21st century brought severe instability. By 2008, the organization was crippled by debt and declared legally insolvent. A court-appointed trustee oversaw the transition until a new ownership group finalized a takeover in February 2009. This period marked a historic milestone when Deborah Caldora assumed the role of chairman, becoming the first woman to lead the club in this capacity. Despite the administrative overhaul, the team continued to face competitive challenges, including a relegation to the third tier in 2007.
A major resurgence occurred under coach Zdeněk Zeman during the 2011–12 season. By leveraging the talents of emerging stars like Marco Verratti, Ciro Immobile, and Lorenzo Insigne, the squad secured promotion to Serie A after a 19-year absence. The club has since utilized unconventional methods to engage its community, such as launching a successful mini-bond investment scheme in 2018 to fund youth facilities and adopting a shirt design created by a six-year-old fan during the 2020 lockdown.
Most recently, the club navigated a difficult period following a 2021 relegation to Serie C. After four years in the third tier, Pescara secured a return to Serie B for the 2025–26 season by winning a penalty shootout against Ternana in the promotion play-offs. This latest chapter underscores the club's enduring ability to rebuild after periods of decline.
