How a bankrupt Italian football club rose from the ashes to reclaim its glory
In short: Modena Football Club has spent over a century navigating the volatile landscape of Italian sports. After a total financial collapse led to the club's dissolution in 2017, a rapid refounding effort saw the team rise from the amateur ranks to secure a hard-fought return to the prestigious Serie B.
Founded in 1912 through the merger of two local sides, Modena has long been a fixture of the Italian football pyramid, spending the majority of its history in Serie B. The club's journey has been marked by extreme highs and lows, including a 1947 victory in the Geneva International Friendship Tournament and a brief, historic return to Serie A in the early 2000s. Throughout its existence, the team has seen legendary figures pass through its ranks, ranging from the celebrated tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who played as a winger, to prolific strikers like Renato Brighenti, who holds the club record with 82 goals.
The club's stability was shattered in November 2017 when it was declared bankrupt following a failure to pay player wages and stadium bills. After missing four consecutive matches, the original entity was excluded from the league and dissolved. However, the city's footballing tradition proved resilient. Under the direction of former president Romano Amadei, a new entity, Modena Football Club 2018, was established to fill the void. The club began its new life in Serie D, quickly rebuilding its infrastructure and personnel to compete once again.
The path back to prominence was swift but demanding. After a playoff loss in its debut season, the club was readmitted to Serie C in 2019. By 2022, under the management of Attilio Tesser, the team secured the Group B title with a narrow two-point lead over rivals Reggiana. This victory marked their return to Serie B, restoring the club to the second tier of Italian football. Today, the club stands as a testament to the endurance of local sporting identity, having successfully navigated the transition from total insolvency to competitive relevance in just a few years.
