In short: In 2015, Parma Calcio 1913 was declared bankrupt with liabilities of €218 million. Most clubs would have vanished into history. Instead, they staged a historic comeback, becoming the first Italian team to achieve three consecutive promotions back to the top flight in just three seasons.

The club's modern era was defined by extreme highs and devastating lows. In the 1990s, fueled by investment from the Parmalat company, Parma became a powerhouse of European football. Between 1992 and 2002, they won eight trophies, including two UEFA Cups and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. They were even considered one of Italy's "Seven Sisters," reaching a record second-place finish in the league during the 1996–97 season.

The collapse was swift. The Parmalat scandal led to insolvency in 2004, and by March 2015, the club faced €218 million in debt—including €63 million in unpaid salaries. The situation was so dire that administrators were forced to put trophies won in the 1990s up for auction just to raise funds. The club was eventually refounded in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football, starting from the absolute bottom.

The resurrection began with a record-breaking response: the new club sold over 9,000 season tickets in its first year, more than doubling the previous Serie D record. They navigated three consecutive seasons of promotion, moving from Serie D to Lega Pro, then to Serie B, and finally back to Serie A by 2018. This feat was cemented on May 18, 2018, when they secured automatic promotion as the first Italian club to complete such a rapid ascent.

Despite this success, the journey remained fraught with controversy. In 2018, the club faced a five-point deduction due to player text messages regarding "reduced effort" in a previous match. However, that penalty was expunged by August 9 of that same year. Today, Parma stands as a testament to sporting survival, having navigated financial ruin to reclaim its place among Italy's elite.
