A £60 silver trophy that sparked a rugby revolution
In short: In 1896, a schism in rugby led to the creation of the Northern Rugby Football Union. To celebrate, they commissioned a silver trophy for just £60. Today, this knockout competition is the world's oldest rugby cup, evolving from a local rebellion into a national spectacle.
The Challenge Cup was born from a fundamental disagreement within the Rugby Football Union. Fearing that nationwide tournaments would lead to professionalism, authorities refused to sanction them. This prompted northern clubs to break away and form the Northern Rugby Football Union, launching their own competition in the 1896–97 season.
The original trophy, crafted by Fattorini's of Bradford, was a 36-inch silver masterpiece on an ebony base. While it cost only £60 in 1897—a bargain compared to modern craftsmanship—the original was eventually withdrawn from competition due to its delicate condition. It was last presented in 2001 to St Helens captain Chris Joynt. Today, a replica created by Jack Spencer of Sheffield is used, featuring a strengthened neck and standardized shields.
The competition's prestige is anchored by the Wembley Stadium final, a tradition that began in 1929. While the tournament has survived the Great War and the Second World War—the latter used to boost morale and raise funds for prisoners of war—it has also seen significant evolution. This includes the 1946 introduction of the Lance Todd Trophy for man-of-the-match honors and the 1999 introduction of the Video Referee.
Wigan Warriors have established themselves as the most successful club, holding a record 22 titles. Their dominance included a remarkable streak where they won every final from 1988 to 1995. Most recently, in the 2026 final, Wigan defeated Hull Kingston Rovers 40–10 at Wembley to secure their 22nd victory.
