The cornerback who holds the NFL record for most passes defended
In short: Champ Bailey wasn't just a specialist; he was a generational talent who dominated the field for 15 seasons. From a three-sport standout in Georgia to a Pro Football Hall of Famer, his ability to disrupt plays set a standard that remains unbroken in the NFL today.
Born Roland "Champ" Bailey Jr. on June 22, 1978, the cornerback's journey began in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His mother, Elaine, gave him the nickname "Champ" when he was an infant. Before reaching the professional stage, Bailey was a versatile athlete at Charlton County High School, excelling in football, basketball, and track, and even setting a school indoor long jump record of 7.89 meters in 1998.
His collegiate career at the University of Georgia from 1996 to 1998 showcased his rare ability as a multiple threat across offense, defense, and special teams. In his concluding collegiate year, he secured consensus All-American status and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the country's premier defensive player. This performance led the Washington Redskins to select him in the first round of the 1999 NFL draft, making him the first player from his hometown of Folkston, Georgia, to be drafted into the league.
Bailey's professional tenure was defined by unprecedented consistency and defensive disruption. A record 12 Pro Bowl selections were made for him, the highest total for a cornerback, and he maintains the NFL's 203-pass-defended benchmark. Following a ten-year stint with the Denver Broncos that ended in early 2014, his 2019 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame occurred during his initial year of eligibility. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the NFL.
