Indonesia's second-tier football league undergoes a major rebranding to become the Championship
In short: After years of evolution from the Premier Division to Liga 2, Indonesia's second-tier football competition has been rebranded as the Championship. Starting in the 2026–27 season, this restructured league introduces a triple round-robin format and full video assistant referee implementation to modernize the path to the top-flight Super League.
The history of Indonesia's second-tier football is marked by frequent structural shifts and organizational changes. Established in 1994 as the top-tier Premier Division, the competition was relegated to the second level in 2008 following the creation of the Indonesia Super League. This era was defined by significant instability, including a period of dualism between 2011 and 2013, where two separate leagues operated simultaneously due to conflicts between governing bodies. By 2017, the competition was renamed Liga 2, a title it held until July 2025.
The transition to the Championship represents a new chapter under the management of Liga Utama Indonesia. The 2025–26 season introduced a rigorous triple round-robin system, requiring 20 clubs to play 27 matches each. Geography dictates the division into two groups of ten, with promotion and relegation determined by a mix of direct placement and high-stakes play-offs. The first-place teams from each group secure automatic promotion to the Super League, while runners-up battle for a final spot. Conversely, the bottom-placed teams face relegation to Liga Nusantara.
Modernization efforts are central to this new iteration. The 2025–26 season marked the first full implementation of video assistant referee technology across the league, building on its initial trial during the 2024–25 play-offs. These changes reflect a broader effort to professionalize the sport, moving away from the fragmented history of the previous decade. As the league enters the 2026–27 season, the focus remains on standardizing competition rules and improving the quality of play to ensure a clear, meritocratic pathway for clubs aiming to reach the pinnacle of Indonesian football.
