In short: In 2004, a major realignment forced two historic rivals to unite. The resulting Orix Buffaloes carry a legacy of legendary managers, unexpected ownership shifts, and a lineage that stretches back to the 1930s, surviving even the most dramatic changes in corporate identity.

The Orix Buffaloes are the product of a 200 and 4 Nippon Professional Baseball realignment, which merged the Orix BlueWave of Kobe with the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes. This union brought together two distinct histories. The franchise's roots trace back to 1936, when it was founded as the Osaka Hankyu Baseball Club by the Hanshin Kyuko Railway Company. For decades, the team was known as the Hankyu Braves, becoming the oldest surviving team in the Pacific League.

The team's history is marked by dramatic shifts in ownership and identity. On October 19, 1988, a day famously called "the longest day of the Pacific League," the Hankyu Railway sold the franchise to Orient Lease. This sale was a shock to the industry, as the founder, Ichizo Kobayashi, had previously decreed that the team must never be sold. The sale was ultimately necessary to keep the Takarazuka Revue financially stable. By 1991, the team moved to Kobe and rebranded as the Orix BlueWave, a change that famously frustrated fans who preferred the traditional 'Braves' name.

Despite periods of struggle following the merger, the club has seen significant recent success. After years of finishing in the lower half of the league, the Buffaloes secured a Pacific League pennant in 2021 and followed it with another in 2022. Their recent dominance included a 2023 season where they achieved their third consecutive pennant, led by standout performances such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto's third consecutive Triple Crown. The club's storied past also includes the era of Ichiro Suzuki, who led the BlueWave to a Japan Series title in 1996.
