Three generations of the Caray family have shaped the sound of American baseball broadcasting.
In short: Chip Caray, born in 1965, carries a storied broadcasting legacy as the son of Skip Caray and grandson of the legendary Harry Caray. From the Chicago Cubs to the Atlanta Braves and now the St. Louis Cardinals, his career spans decades of play-by-play history across major professional sports networks.
Chip Caray’s career began in local television before he moved into major league sports, serving as the play-by-play announcer for the Orlando Magic from 1989 to 1998. His baseball journey took him to the Seattle Mariners in 1993, where he stayed for three seasons. By 1997, he joined his grandfather, Harry Caray, at the Chicago Cubs. Following Harry’s death in 1998, Chip stepped into the role of 'the voice of the Cubs,' a position he held for seven seasons alongside color commentator Steve Stone.
In 2005, Caray shifted to the Atlanta Braves to work with his father, Skip Caray, while also taking on national duties for TBS. During his tenure as the network's main playoff broadcaster starting in 2007, he faced public criticism regarding factual errors. Caray defended his performance by noting that his rhythm suffered because he was not broadcasting frequently enough, comparing his role to a relief pitcher who rarely takes the mound. He and TBS parted ways in 2009, leading him to focus on regional sports networks.
The Caray family legacy continues into a fourth generation. Chip’s son, Chris Caray, has begun his own career in sportscasting, even sharing a professional moment with his father in 2024 when they both called games during a Cardinals-Athletics series. Louis Cardinals, the same franchise where his grandfather Harry first established his reputation. Despite his long tenure, Caray has faced recent scrutiny, including a 2025 incident where he misread a promotional script, though his network deemed the error unintentional and took no disciplinary action.
