From high school sidelines to Michigan's offensive coordinator
In short: Chip Lindsey's journey through college football is a masterclass in coaching progression. From managing high school rosters in Alabama to architecting offenses for major programs like Auburn and North Carolina, his career reflects the intense, high-stakes evolution of modern collegiate play-calling.
Born on September 9, 1974, Chip Lindsey has built a diverse coaching resume spanning decades of collegiate football. After earning a degree in history and English from the University of Alabama in 1997, he began his coaching career at the high school level in Alabama. His early years included roles at Springville, Sparkman, and Deshler High Schools, where he helped lead Deshler to two undefeated regular seasons by 2004. Before entering the collegiate ranks, he played football for the University of North Alabama. He later transferred to the University of Alabama to complete his studies.
Lindsey's ascent into major college programs was marked by significant roles at several high-profile universities. During the 2014–2015 period, he held the role of offensive coordinator for the University of Southern Mississippi, a squad that ranked 12th across the country in total offensive output. He later moved to Arizona State in 2016 and joined Auburn University in 2017, earning an $800,000 compensation package to serve as offensive coordinator under Gus Malzahn. During his time in Arizona, he helped lead the Sun Devils to a 5–7 finish. His coaching tenure at Auburn coincided with the Tigers winning an SEC title.
His tenure at Auburn was notable for the team winning the SEC West Division Championship during the 2017 season. Following a stint as head coach at Troy University from 2019 to 2021, Lindsey continued his upward trajectory through roles at UCF and the University of North Carolina. Most recently, he was hired by Sherrone Moore at the University of Michigan in December 2024, and was named offensive coordinator at the University of Missouri on December 21, 2025. While at North Carolina, he played a key role in developing Drake Maye, who became the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. His move to Michigan followed the departure of Phil Longo from the North Carolina staff.
