In short: Most elite college football coaches spent their youth on the field, but Glenn Schumann took a different path. Starting as a student assistant at Alabama in 2008, he bypassed a playing career entirely to master the game from the sidelines, eventually becoming a defensive guru for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Born in 1990 in Valdosta, Georgia, Glenn Schumann grew up in a coaching family, moving across the country as his father, Eric, worked in collegiate athletics. Despite lettering in football and basketball at McKinney Boyd High School in Texas, Schumann did not play college football. Instead, he enrolled at Alabama in 2008, where he began his career as a student assistant under legendary head coach Nick Saban. During this formative period, he focused on doing whatever was asked of him, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts in 2011 and a Master’s degree in sports management in 2013.

Schumann’s transition from student assistant to graduate assistant allowed him to work directly with Saban and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. He gained experience managing defensive game plans and coaching both outside linebackers and the secondary. By 2014, he took on the role of director of football operations, overseeing player development and recruiting. When Kirby Smart became the head coach at Georgia, he recruited Schumann as his first hire, naming him the inside linebackers coach. At the time, this made Schumann the youngest on-field coaching assistant in the SEC.

His impact was immediate, notably helping linebacker Roquan Smith win the Butkus Award in 2017. Following the departure of defensive coordinator Mel Tucker in 2019, Schumann was promoted to co-defensive coordinator. Under his guidance, Georgia’s defense became the nation's best that year, allowing just 12.6 points and 276 yards per game. Schumann has since contributed to multiple national championships, including victories in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Despite interest from professional teams like the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, he has remained a cornerstone of the Georgia coaching staff, cementing his reputation as a tactical expert who rose through the ranks without ever playing a collegiate down.
