From wartime naval escort to the world's first postwar superyacht
In short: Before it was a floating monument to billionaire excess, this vessel defended Atlantic convoys. Transformed by Aristotle Onassis from a surplus Canadian frigate into a palace of ostentation, the Christina O redefined luxury through a blend of naval engineering and breathtaking, sometimes bizarre, artistry.
Launched in 1943, the vessel began its life as the HMCS Stormont, a Canadian River-class frigate. During the Second World War, it served as a vital convoy escort in the Battle of the Atlantic and participated in the historic Normandy landings. Following the war, Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis purchased the ship as naval surplus for a mere US$34,000.
Onassis invested US$4 million to convert the warship into the first postwar superyacht, naming it after his daughter, Christina. Designed by architect Cäsar Pinnau, the refit utilized the ship's robust naval systems to support unprecedented luxuries. The interiors featured a swimming pool with a mosaic floor that transformed into a dance floor, and a children's dining room painted by illustrator Ludwig Bemelman. The decor was famously provocative, including bar stools upholstered in whale foreskins and whale teeth carved into scenes from the Odyssey.
The yacht became a centerpiece of mid-century high society, hosting a legendary guest list that included Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1956, it even hosted the post-wedding reception for Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, and Grace Kelly.
The vessel's ownership has been as turbulent as its origins. After Onassis' death in 1975, both his daughter and his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, declined to inherit the ship. The Greek government eventually took control, renaming it Argo, but allowed it to fall into decay. It was later rescued by shipping magnate John Paul Papanicolaou, who restored its original name and underwent a massive $50 million refurbishment between 1999 and 2001.
