The Anglican bishop who warned of ecumenical consequences over same-sex marriage
In short: Christopher Hill's career spanned the highest levels of the Church of England, from serving as a chaplain to Elizabeth II to leading the Council of European Churches. However, his tenure was marked by a sharp warning to the Church of Sweden regarding their decision to approve same-sex marriage.
Born on 10 October 1945, Christopher John Hill has occupied several significant roles within the Anglican communion. His career saw him serve as the Bishop of Stafford from 1996 to 2004 and subsequently as the Bishop of Guildford from 2004 until 2013. Apart from his work in the diocese, he acted as Clerk of the Closet within the Sovereign of the United Kingdom's Ecclesiastical Household from 2005 until 2014.
Hill's ministry has been deeply rooted in ecumenical relations, the effort to promote unity among different Christian denominations. He served as Co-Secretary of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission from 1974 to 1981 and later became the president of the Council of European Churches in 2013. His influence reached a peak of controversy in July 2009, when he criticized the Church of Sweden's decision to approve same-sex marriage. In a letter to Archbishop Anders Wejryd, Hill warned that this move could lead to "immediate and negative ecumenical consequences."
An alumnus of Sebright School and King's College London, Hill's academic background includes a Bachelor of Divinity, an Associate of King's College, and a Master of Theology. His transition through the church hierarchy moved from his first curacy in Tividale (1969–1973) to becoming a canon residentiary and Precentor of St Paul's Cathedral in 1989. He announced his retirement from the See of Guildford on 28 March 2013, officially stepping down at the end of September that year.
