From college champion to a million-dollar contract dispute
In short: Christian Wilkins climbed the ranks from a five-star recruit to a first-round NFL draft pick. Yet, despite massive guaranteed earnings, his career has been marked by high-stakes victories and controversial disciplinary incidents that led to a massive contract voiding.
Christian Wilkins’ ascent began in the high school ranks of Massachusetts, where he recorded 253 tackles and 28.5 sacks across 35 games. After committing to Clemson University, he became a central figure in one of college football's most dominant eras. He helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back National Championship victories, defeating Alabama 35–31 in 2017 and 44–16 in 2018.
His transition to the professional level saw him selected 13th overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2019 NFL draft. While his talent was evident—notably recording a career-high nine sacks in 2023—his tenure has been punctuated by disciplinary issues. In his early Dolphins career, he was ejected during a Week 7 loss to the Buffalo Bills after throwing a punch. Similar controversies surfaced during his sophomore year at Clemson, when an inappropriate physical interaction with an opponent drew significant criticism.
The most significant financial and professional upheaval occurred following his move to the Las Vegas Raiders. After signing a four-year, $110 million deal in March 2024, Wilkins' time in Las Vegas ended abruptly. In July 2025, the Raiders released him and moved to void $35.2 million of his guaranteed salary, citing concerns over his rehabilitation approach and an incident involving an unwelcome attempt to kiss a teammate. The dispute, which led Wilkins to file a grievance with the NFLPA, resulted in him receiving $49.7 million of his original contract after playing only five games for the franchise.
