The football club that survived a literal fire and an 8-year exile
In short: In 1956, a single torch thrown into a wooden ramp turned Club Puebla's stadium into a ruin. The financial blow was so severe the club folded entirely, vanishing from professional football for nearly a decade. This is the story of a team that refused to stay dead.
Founded in 1944 as Puebla Fútbol Club, the team was born from the merger of two Spanish-influenced clubs: First Puebla F.C. (founded by Spaniards in the city) and Club Fútbol Asturias de Puebla (founded by Spaniards from Asturias). This heritage is still visible today in their identity as 'La Franja,' characterized by a distinctive diagonal stripe across their kits.
The club's early years were marked by rapid success, including a 1944–45 Copa México title where they defeated América 6–4 on aggregate. However, disaster struck in 1956. After owner Manuel Hidalgo was abandoned by other stakeholders, the club faced a financial crisis. When their home ground, Parque El Mirador, burned down, the loss of 300 thousand pesos forced the club to fold. They were denied a hiatus by the federation, who threatened relegation to the second division if they took time off.
Puebla remained in limbo until 1964, when a group of owners successfully reformed the club. They spent six years grinding through the Segunda División before securing promotion back to the Primera División in 1970. Since then, the club has navigated a rollercoaster of history, including a 1991 CONCACAF Champions Cup victory and a period in the late 1970s where they survived multiple relegation scares, often relying on individual stars like Silvio Fogel to keep the club afloat.
Today, the club stands as a testament to resilience. It has won two Liga MX titles and five Copa MX titles, maintaining its place in Mexico's top flight despite the literal ashes of its past.
