In short: Founded in 1924 by students at the National University of San Marcos, Club Universitario de Deportes has become a cornerstone of Peruvian identity. From a small university league to a continental powerhouse, the club has secured 29 national titles and established one of the most intense sporting rivalries in South America.

The club's origins trace back to August 7, 1924, when students like José Rubio Galindo and Luis Málaga Arenas sought to form a great institution. Originally named Federación Universitaria, the group began by holding small tournaments between different university faculty departments. After years of inter-university play, they were invited to join the Peruvian Primera División in 1928, debuting with a dominant 7–1 victory over Club José Olaya.

The club's identity was shaped by both triumph and necessity. In 1931, the university rector, José Antonio Encinas, forbade the club from using the name Federación Universitaria, forcing a rename to Club Universitario de Deportes—a change that preserved the symbolic 'U' still used today. This era also saw the rise of the legendary Teodoro 'Lolo' Fernández, who debuted in 1931 and later became a standout performer at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, scoring seven goals.

Universitario's dominance is reflected in its statistics and infrastructure. Recognized by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics as the best Peruvian club of the 20th century, they have secured 29 national championships. They were also the first Peruvian club to reach the Copa Libertadores final in 1972. Today, they play at the Estadio Monumental, which holds 80,093 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Peru and the second-largest in South America.

Beyond football, the 'U' is a multi-sport institution with teams in volleyball, futsal, and basketball. Their rivalry with Alianza Lima, which dates back to their 1928 debut, remains one of the fiercest and oldest on the continent. While the club has faced controversies, such as the disputed 1934 title, they remain a dominant force in Peruvian sports, maintaining a presence in the top tier since 1928 without ever being relegated.
