In short: In 2012, Cody Zeller was projected as a top ten NBA pick. Yet, the highly touted Indiana standout chose to return to the Hoosiers for another year, prioritizing his collegiate experience over a professional career. This decision would define the early chapter of a journey through the NBA's elite.

Cody Zeller’s ascent began in Washington, Indiana, where he earned the prestigious Indiana Mr. Basketball title in 2011, following in the footsteps of both his elder brothers. A highly ranked recruit, his standing varied by scout: ESPN placed him as the 13th best overall recruit that year, while Scout.com rated him 12th nationally.

Upon committing to Indiana University in November 2010, he was famously labeled 'the savior of Indiana basketball.' During his freshman season (2011–12), Zeller displayed remarkable efficiency, shooting 62.3 percent from the field and leading the Big Ten in that category. His performance earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and a place on the All-Big Ten second team.

Despite the opportunity to enter the 201 and projected top ten pick, Zeller returned for his sophomore season (2012–13) alongside teammate Victor Oladipo. He cited a desire to complete his college experience, eventually leading the Hoosiers to an outright Big Ten championship. This second year saw him earn First Team All-Big Ten honors and a second-team All-American distinction.

His professional career began when the Charlotte Bobcats selected him fourth overall in the 2013 NBA draft. Over the following decade, Zeller became a seasoned veteran, moving through franchises including the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz, and Miami Heat—where he reached the 2023 NBA Finals—before later stints with the New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets.
