From high school phenom to international standout: the resilient career of Jared Sullinger
In short: Once a top-ranked high school prospect destined for NBA stardom, Jared Sullinger’s journey was defined by immense talent and persistent physical setbacks. From dominating the Big Ten to finding championship success in Korea and China, his career spans continents and incredible displays of rebounding prowess.
Jared Sullinger entered the basketball spotlight as a premier high school talent, earning the 2010 James A. Naismith Award as the nation's top high school player. During his senior year at Northland High School, he led his team to an undefeated 21–0 season, averaging 24.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. His collegiate years at Ohio State were equally impactful; he earned Big Ten Tournament MVP honors in 2011 and helped lead the Buckeyes to a Final Four appearance in 2012.
His transition to the professional ranks in the NBA was marked by both brilliance and injury. Drafted 21st overall by the Boston Celtics in 2012, Sullinger demonstrated elite rebounding, once recording a 20-point, 20-rebound performance in 2014. However, his career was frequently interrupted by significant medical hurdles, including lumbar disk surgery in 2013 and a metatarsal stress fracture in 2015 that required a screw to be inserted into his foot during his tenure with the Toronto Raptors.
As his NBA tenure concluded, Sullinger found renewed success in international leagues. In China, playing for the Shenzhen Leopards, he achieved a staggering single-game feat in 2018 by recording 40 points and 31 rebounds. He also found championship glory in South Korea with Anyang KGC in 2021. After a decorated period as the CBA International MVP in 2024, Sullinger retired from professional play in 2026 to return to his roots, joining the Ohio State coaching staff.
